This week the long awaited changes to Legal Aid came into force. Many more domestic violence victims will now be able to get Legal Aid to pay for the cost of help with divorce proceedings. Also Legal Aid is available for advice and representation at court on financial issues arising from a separation and about where the children live and what time they spend with the other party.

HSW Senior Partner Jane Wilson, an accredited specialist family lawyer in domestic abuse and author of Domestic Abuse: Practice and Precedents published by The Law Society, explains ‘Domestic violence is not only physical violence. It includes emotional abuse such as coercive control and financial abuse. More domestic abuse sufferers on a low income or state benefits will now be able to get Legal Aid.’
